Open the steam valve and remove the silicone hose elbow fitting from inlet side of the pump.Start inspecting the pick-up filter screen in the reservoir and the silicone hose and make sure neither is clogged.There is no water at all and/or the pump is humming: The machine’s passages are possibly clogged by scale/sediment, or the pump might be bad. Here are a couple of scenarios to consider:Ī. Just because there is water coming out of the grouphead or steam wand during these tests, it doesn’t mean that the flow is strong enough to push open mechanisms or push through fine coffee grounds. We do not recommend using vinegar to descale an espresso machine, instead, use a product that is specifically designed for your equipment, such as the Puly Caff brand we sell. If you are getting some water to flow through the machine, but not enough to activate the brewing cycle, you should consider descaling the machine. Refer to the diagram and the parts pictures on this link if you do not know the names or where to locate the parts mentioned below. Make sure your machine is properly primed (refer to your instruction booklet). We are starting this troubleshooting assuming that voltage is arriving to your pump. Once the wire is safe, plug the machine back in.Remove one of the spades/wires from the post, insulate it with electricians' tape to avoid accidental shocking or shorting.Locate the heating element (2 posts in the middle of the boiler with 2 bare spade connectors).If the front lip is stuck, you can try carefully prying it out. Remove six screws and pull the stainless steel cover up.

We strongly suggest removing one of the heating element wires to eliminate the chance of burning out the element out or the thermal fuse (some machines will have a non-resettable fuse some will have a manual resettable safety thermostat). If water is not present inside the boiler you can damage the heating element and or the thermofuse. Never run the pump for more than 1 minute at a time, and be sure to let it rest for 1 minute between priming attempts. This is just a logical procedure to follow to determine what is likely wrong. My goal is to pinpoint the problem and if the thermostat is Go, then I can dig for something else.Troubleshooting Saeco/Starbucks Barista Not Pumping and/or Brewing I also thought a thermostat is either Go or NoGo, that it could not be partially defective, as if it would command to stop boiling at a lower temperature point than designed. Like what is the trigger for the steam thermostat to stop boiling the water? Can it be as simple as let’s say 120DegC (250 DegF)? But I’m not sure I understand what the thermostat input is and what output it gives to the boiler. Somehow I feel the water may not being all turned into steam (or less than it should be). My understanding is that when I press the steam switch, the boiler starts heating the water to transform it into steam.
I then open the valve and eject a bit of water for 2 seconds before I start to steam my milk (with only a 60-70% efficiency which is my problem). I confirm that the steam light comes on approximately 1-2 minutes after the steam switch is pressed, which is as it always been since day one. This can also cause less than optimal heating.
If there is, you have current leakage due to corrosion inside. Unplug the machine, and place one lead of a multimeter on the top of the heating element, and the other on the metal of the boiler. This can happen if there is corrosion inside the boiler that wears through the coating on the element.
You can also check the heating element for current leakage. There are two, and it sounds like if the machine brews coffee normally, it might be the steam thermostat.
The thermostat in your machine is probably simply failing. Some of the newer models have a reset button on top, but those either work, or don’t. When the upper limit is reached, the circuit “opens”, and the heating element stops heating the water. Your understanding of the thermostats is correct, they usually work, or don’t. It sounds like your thermostat is functioning to a certain point, if the light is coming on.
